My sunshine gift is here

Cara from over at Creative Playground was my buddy who sent me a box of sunshine

Photobucket

Jameson from Lessons with Coffee is hosting this event and it is amazing.

   Lessons With Coffee

Jameson matches bloggers/teachers up and we get to know each other by looking at blogs, facebook, emails etc and then send a box of goodies to that match, while someone else gets to know you and sends you one too.

This was my second time and Cara sent me an amazing box of sunshine. Cara thanks so much for all the items in my sunshine box. The last picture is fabulous. Cara is also a clip art designer and made me a mini me to use on nay of my stuff.
Cara you are amazing - thanks.

The tape on the outside was even leopard print! Cara made a sign for me for my classroom. complete with feathers, ribbons and shiny stuff.

There were note pads, mini calendars, cards to us chalk as pens, list paper, paper packs.....

Mini clipboards, note cards and a mini me!

 Cara you are amazing!

Literacy and Numeracy Week

This week is our Literacy and Numeracy Week.

We are looking at tasks based on the book Sunday Chutney.

Sunday Chutney by Aaron Blabey explores many themes such as friendship, self-reliance and the importance of family. This story will appeal to all ages and the themes will take students in many directions.

For Numeracy we are looking at water and today we looked at how we could represent our water bottles in a graph - so today we looked at how we could group.

I have prepared a powerpoint for our grade to record their answers and show their learning.

I will post about how the graphs look later in the week when they are done.
Some are talking about algebra graphs - we will see.

Other tasks we are doing are
What do we use water for?
How does water get to our school?
How far does it have to travel?
Where does drinking water come from?
Why is it important to keep water clean?
Why is it important to conserve water?

Conduct a school water audit.
Where is the water in your school?
Produce a map of the school and its water.
Extension - with grid references for the main water sources. Photographs and drawings could be added.

Sorting types of water bottles
Sort the class water bottles according to one of their attributes (e.g. colour, size, shape, tops, logos, materials, recyclability).
Make a physical ‘bottle graph’ of the results and photograph it. Re-sort using a different attribute(s).
 Graph the results on paper.
Are there any different impressions gained when using a formal graphing system with consistent intervals? Why might that be?

Can some of your results be displayed in a Venn diagram?
Find how much 20 litres of water weighs and compare it to the weight of a typical school bag.
Who in the class could carry that weight? For how long?
Could your family manage on 40 litres of water a day?
Collect data on how much water the class drinks in a school day. Decide on the measure that will be used (e.g. if the measure is to be the number of glasses, how big is a glass?). You may choose to use survey questions or use a recording sheet. Display the raw data.

Represent the results in a suitable fashion. Some options might be picture graphs (e.g. trace an outline of a person and draw the number of glasses of water around it), tables, column graphs, dot plots, stem-and-leaf plots.

Calculate the mean, mode, median and range of results. Which is the most appropriate measure of centre? How useful is the range?

It is recommended we drink around eight glasses (or approximately 2 litres) of water a day. How do the class results compare?

Comment on how the amount of water consumed can vary on different days of the week/month/year. Discuss other factors that can affect the amount consumed.

Predict how much water your class will drink in a year. Would it be enough to fill a swimming pool?
Mixing fractions - Extension
“I have two cups of cordial. One cup has ⅓ cordial and ⅔ water and the other glass has ¼ cordial and ¾ water. Which would taste the strongest? How do you know?”

Create some other problems using fractions and amounts in cups. Can they explain their solutions using diagrams and number lines? What is the trickiest one that they can solve?

Ask the students to express the different mixes as decimals and percentages. Can they use a one-hundred grid to explain their solutions?

Princess and the Pea - Writing and Craftivity

This new pack, Princess and the Pea  contains tasks for English, Math and Craft for K-1 and has 60 pages.

Thursday - Planning

A look into my day - boy!

So I am linking up with blog hoppin for the Thursday link up.

It really means a look into Fiona and my day.
We team teach and partners in crime.
We have 45 Year 5/6's in a shared teaching space.
Here is a copy of our timetable - this is a random week.

This is our weekly plan and then we have more details in our Literacy and Numeracy planners.
(I have changed the names of our kids to a font you cannot read.)

Who am I?

This week I will be attempting to link up with Blog Hoppin for a series of posts.
The first one in the series is........

So - even though you may know some of these things, here I go....

This is what is on for the week. I hope I can keep up!

My family - my husband, Tony is also in education. He is a Principal of a small rural school, he also blogs and has a TPT store. Our son Nic is in Uni and our daughter, Imogen is in her second last year of high school. They are so supportive and as a small family we are very isolated a our larger family live so far away.

My work life is great. I teach Year 5/6 this year. Our team is fantastic and we work so well together.

Traveling overseas is something I have discovered a love for in the last few years. We have been to Bali, Malaysia, Singapore and Fiji.

Life is too short to put up with second rate - enjoy great food, wine and friends whenever you can!

I will not count my shoes or handbags - never.

A cold and wet rainy day = a day at home and I love it.

I am still trying to get that balance right.

I love watching TV when I am working on my computer. SVU Special Victims gets me every time.

If you had a look at my music collection - you would wonder what is going on. I love so many different styles. I am listening to May, Manfred Man, Lanie Lane, Julia Stone, Jimmy Barnes and Jack Johnson at the moment.

Love a good joke - we should all laugh as often as possible.

Meet the teacher link up

I have been teaching for a while (1985) - almost 30 years. I still love it and wouldn't be doing anything else.
I met my husband in my first year of teaching and we got married the following year.
Neither of us are spur of the moment but we got married after being together for 7 months.
We moved interstate less than a year later.
We met teaching in Queensland and have lived in Victoria for almost 28 years.
Yep - we are both teachers.
We have two kids aged 19 and 17.
My extended family still live in Queensland and I miss them terribly.
I love to travel and have been to many parts of Asia and also Fiji.
