Columbus Day - 13th October
Columbus Day, which is annually on the second Monday of October, remembers Christopher Columbus' arrival to the Americas on October 12, 1492.

This pack will enable you to gather information on what your
students know about Columbus.
You will help your students to form lists and use these to lists write and
share information, culminating in a class shared book.
Word Wall - As a grade brainstorm
words to do with the topic and add to the correct place on the chart. Use this
word bank to assist in writing tasks, recording facts, increase vocabulary and
assist in spelling
KWHL - Copy each page and display. As a grade list the
things you - Know about Christopher Columbus- Want to know about Christopher
Columbus- How will we find this out- Our new Learning about about Christopher
Columbus – there are color and black and white versions
Word Splashes- Around each picture record words to describe the image. Discuss adjectives, verbs and nouns
Writing tasks - If I were Christopher Columbus I would… - I
would like to be Christopher Columbus because……- I see a new land- The sea was
rough
Read the Room - Display the cards
numbered 1-6 and A-F. Find each card and write down what the card says in the
correct space. This will give you a summary of why Christopher Columbus went on
this voyage. Make sure the capitals and punctuation are in the right spot. This
will help when you read it back.
Word Making - Use the names of the three ships to make as
many words as you can. How many words can be made from ‘Christopher Columbus’?
Journal - As the voyage was being planned and sailed –
Columbus kept a journal. Record what you think he may have written for the
following events. Print off the pages and get the grade to write in pairs –
sharing a page between two. When complete staple the book together and share as
a class book.
Fire Prevention Week
It is Fire Prevention Week and this topic is close to home for my family.
When our kids were in Grade 1 and Grade 3 we had a house fire.
It started with an electric blanket......
We were so lucky and only lost 'stuff'
We were all safe and that was all that mattered.
So many are not so lucky! Please make sure you have a fire plan at home and that you get your family to carry it out as a drill often. We had and met at the letter box and our story was a positive one.
Make sure your alarms have fresh batteries each year.
Have a drill with your grade and let them all know what to do in an emergency.

It is at time like this that I wish I was in the USA as I love Halloween and I could so do the decorations. I do have a 'treat' at the end of this post.

Loving - that our daughter is back from an 18 day school trip to Japan. She had an amazing time and saw so much. She missed pizza, doritos and vegemite,
Tony and I went to Tasmania for about a week.
So now we are all home.
Thinking - how lucky I am to have good health. I have a few friends who are seriously unwell and are having to undergo chemo. My cousin has a little girl who is only one and this lovely baby is having chemo. Two other people I know are also having to fight the fight of their life.
