First - a math linky with iSURF(c)

Here is my game for this week -

The old game called '21' is great for consolidating addition. You can change the total they need to get and start with 10 and then make the total larger as they become more efficient. 

The dealer hands out two cards each. Add them together and you may ask for more cards, if you go beyond 21 you are out!

I have this dislike for the word 'sum' - it does mean the total of two or more collections, but so many teachers use it when they are doing subtraction, division and multiplication. They are equations or operations not sums. We need to teach our kids the correct terminology.

Playing cards are an under utilised resource in our classrooms. 

Now for a Peek at my Week with Mrs Laffin

I have a nice slow week this week - we are planning a Teddy Bear's picnic, we are measuring bears, making hats for them, making a Corduroy Bear, doing some great writing to describe bears, writing invitations and postcards, sequencing heights of bears, drawing bears to scale and comparing bears. 

We gather assessments as an ongoing process at our school - I need to benchmark five more of my kids in reading, look at my portfolios (I have been a bit slack and haven't glued everything in from last term), I am planning on doing a "Writing Vocab" test and some spelling tests for Oxford Words with two groups. 

I want to finish my work on pumpkins and and get that posted - but I don't think that will happen.

I need to clean up a cupboard that I am putting off ......

What I need is a massage and pedicure!

Take a chance - Maths Linky

These photos I took a few weeks ago - they show my kids playing a game called 'Take a Chance'.

I am also linking up with iSURF to share - go on over and link up a game you have used

Use this link - to get the free game mats for all three sets.

They need to predict the number they think they will roll the most.

Then they roll a dice using a the rolling mat. A quiet dice is a great dice.

In our new curriculum - this is now Statistics and Probability.

We use a 1-6 for children who are working on numerals under 10 and then we use 1-12 for students who know there numbers to 10.

I need to do a 20 sided dice version as we have students who are best fit with those numbers.

I am joining up with iSURF(c)  share a maths game that I am sure you have all used

 

 

This involves a set of dice and depending on the ability level of your students you may use 2. 3. 4 or 5 dice.

 

 Pair up with a buddy, roll the dice and the make the smallest number and the biggest number

Each child needs to say the number - this is great for place value fluency with numerals and manipulating numbers

Maths Game Linkup #3

 

If you visit the blog called iSURF that  Kerry and I co-write you will see this Maths Linkup every Sunday night. Tonight we have featured a dice app. It is a new linkup and hopefully will grow over time.

 

While you are there become a follower and join up with your own ideas for a maths game/task that you love to use in your room.

 

Here is my idea from Paula's Place for this week!

 

 

Use cards that have numerals and words for the numerals for children to match together.

Use this regularly so that your children become fluent in this task. 

I add numerals and words as each student achieves with the cards they have.

This allows for differentiation. Each child can have their own cards in a small zip lock pocket with their name on it.

They love being able to do this faster each time and with accuracy.

Partner Directions - for location

 

With a partner, in the classroom or playground, use terms like

- quarter turn

- half turn

- three quarter turn

- right

- left

to give and follow directions for walking to a location

Then explore ways of recording this using the appropriate terms.

Relate the rotational movements to the minute hand on an analogue clock.
