Interactive Notebook for Maths

We have been implementing Interactive Notebooks for Maths. 

We have a model teacher book to show how to set them out and then we do each section together step by step.

This is the set out for one page. 

With the interactive parts on one side and the reflections on the other. 

This is our first go!

       

We worked on scale and then went through a series of tasks to look at what we learnt. 

After our learning we came back and recorded what we found out and had a go at recording some proof. 

        

We were very pleased with our starting pages. 

These are a series of lessons we compiled to cover a unit of work to devise a running track. Watch this space for the whole unit t be revealed.....

When I put together a product - there is a part of me that goes with it when I post it to my digital shops. 

They are like babies - nurtured, loved and they grow when others purchase them and use them.

I love the designing part, the searching of Curriculum, organising tasks and getting it right. The link between product and assessment is really important to me.

Measuring in the sun and sand

 

 Oh my goodness - the sun was out and we had  planned a measuring lesson in the sandpit.

 

We were meant to be measuring water as well - but even though the sky looked amazing it was a mere 10 degrees celsius.

It was freezing cold - but that didn't stop us from measuring, comparing, testing and checking out our guesses and working as a team.

 

A teachers we often leave this part of Maths until last - we avoid it and put it off.
 

We shouldn't as kids love it and get so much out of it.

 

We compared all containers - especially those that looked similar but were slightly different.

 

 

 

 

 

Some of this group - worked out that 2 x 500 ml containers were the same as a litre.

 

They worked out that 4 cups was the same as a litre.

 

Some decided that counting was tricky so they used tallies in the sand to keep track.

 

That was exciting for me as we had been working on tallies.

 Did I mention the sun was out? - but we were pleased to get inside and get warm again.

Measuring length

 

At the end of last week we did some measuring of length and comparing.

 

Part of our new curriculum suggests that this task will help teachers to assess what our students know.

 

We needed to roll out two snakes - this was our first hurdle and we had to learn how to do this. We assume too many things sometimes! So we had to learn how to make a rolled out snake.

 

They needed to make a short snake and a long snake.

 

Then they needed top sit them on this page and then go and find objects from around the room that were the same length as the snakes.

 

I needed to have conversations with them about the choice they were making about objects.

 

The students then needed to draw the objects they found.

 

My anecdotes now indicate which students are at the expected level, which ones are above and which ones need support to get to the expected level.
