Read to Someone

Fiona (my teaching buddy) and I tightened up our 'Read to Someone' today.
We have lots of glass on our external walls and we have an agreed protocol to not put things on the glass.
So display space is at a premium.
We use our IWB (Interactive Whiteboard) for Anchor Charts.
This was compiled by our kids.
This just proves that Year 5/6 students can also do Daily 5.
I just love the photos.
PS - we struggle to do the - 'stay out of the way'....

Revisiting 'Read to Someone'

WOW! We revisited the aspects of 'Read to Someone' today. I was impressed with the fact that they could tell me that they needed to be EEKK and we use rock. paper. scissors to determine who reads first. This cuts out all those discussions/arguments about who goes first.

We choose best fit books - which I have in their boxes for them at this point. Next week we introduce book shopping and choosing best fit books for their box.

I did have to tighten up the asking of questions after we had finished reading. They ask "What has happened so far in the book?' and next week we will also add "tell me about the characters' as we are looking at this in Literacy and Discovery Learning.

Read to someone

We have been practising 'Read to Self" and have increased our stamina, we can now read for almost 12 minutes.

Today we introduced 'Read to Someone".
We modelled EEKK (Elbow to elbow and knee to knee), discussed why knee has a silent 'k', used rock, paper, scissors to see who starts and looked at how we share a text, asking a question about what has happened so far in the book - they did this for 6 minutes. Amazing!
We have a brainstormed list that shows what is expected for the students and the teachers. We need to revisit this and refine our roles and tighten up the whole process.
But it is worth reminding myself that we have only been at school for a few short weeks.

I need to explain that when I say 'we' I mean our team of 4 Prep teachers. We are working closely together, plan, team teach and manage our new space. I feel very fortunate to be working with this team.

Loving Daily 5!
