Read to Self - Day 2

My grade, our grade this year are AMAZING!!!!!

Read to Self on our second day was 25 minutes.

The day before Stacey (my teaching team buddy) and I explained that they had a job tomorrow to impress us with READ to SELF

DID they ever!

They came in - sorted their bags, organised their book box and just got down to business.

We have Year 3/4 an the Year 3 kids were part of my Year Preps and they have had 3 years of Daily 5 d they got on with it.

The investment we made as a staff has paid off.

It was like - do not wake a sleeping baby - we got to 25 minutes and stamina was gold.

Tomorrow we map out our anchor chart......I think we will be seasoned pros at this.

Read to someone

We have been practising 'Read to Self" and have increased our stamina, we can now read for almost 12 minutes.

Today we introduced 'Read to Someone".
We modelled EEKK (Elbow to elbow and knee to knee), discussed why knee has a silent 'k', used rock, paper, scissors to see who starts and looked at how we share a text, asking a question about what has happened so far in the book - they did this for 6 minutes. Amazing!
We have a brainstormed list that shows what is expected for the students and the teachers. We need to revisit this and refine our roles and tighten up the whole process.
But it is worth reminding myself that we have only been at school for a few short weeks.

I need to explain that when I say 'we' I mean our team of 4 Prep teachers. We are working closely together, plan, team teach and manage our new space. I feel very fortunate to be working with this team.

Loving Daily 5!

'read to self'

Day One of Prep - I had organised book boxes with all Level 1 books and they had either 3 or 4 students' names on them. They sat around their book box and practised 'read to self'. Each time I noticed that we were not doing 'read to self' correctly we stopped.
This is what Joan and Gail (the 2 sisters) suggest. You model what you saw and ask is that 'read to self'? You re-focus and then try again. Each time we are trying to build stamina. On Day One we went for only 2 minutes. Day Two - 4 minutes, Day Three - 5 minutes and today which is Day Four 6 minutes.
At the end you do a check in with your thumbs - did we ..... and go through each item on your anchor chart for 'read to self'. We are attempting to build to 30 minutes by the end of Term Two. I think we are well on our way.

Read to self posters

Last Monday - yes our first day as Preps! We got together and brainstormed our 'read to self' poster. As a few of our Preps have older brothers and sisters they knew about this as they saw it when they dropped them off last year.

I have recorded exactly what our Preps said and we were amazed by what they came up with. Here are our efforts.

The smaller ones around our large poster are our anchor charts for where to read, the three ways to read and what is a best fit book.

The posters are ones I have made and I am happy to email to you if you want them as PDF's. They contain the five components of daily 5 - contact me pjshaw2@gmail.com
