My Word Book – A Personal Dictionary

 There is a colored version and a black/white version. 

The black and white version can be copied onto colored paper to give you a third printing option. 

 The booklet contains words from various word lists that we all use in classrooms. 

They contain the most used words that our students use in their daily writing. 

There is space to add your own words. 

By adding the student’s words the booklets become point of need and are tailored to each writer. 

So, keep them close when it is writing time. 

 Copy your selected version – each copy makes two books. 

Staple the pages together and cut in half to make the two copies. 

There are instructions to show you how to do this.

Word Work using an Animal Theme and Diary of a Wombat

So introducing Diary of a Wombat. Read 'Diary of a Baby Wombat' and then create your own diary. Choose your animal and find out what they might do in a day. The book 'Diary of a Baby Wombat' is funny and is great for predicting and seeing how an author creates a sense of humour for the reader using short sentences.

Daily 5 - word work

A short post tonight.

We have been having so much fun while doing word work this week. 

These magnetic letters have been helping us to learn out sight words. 

We use our 'best fit' words from our M100W. 

We make our words and then show a buddy who checks them while we read them and make sure they are correct.

We are also loving play dough words for the same reason.

I have a small group of students who are still needing work on initial sounds.

 

So I have put together this pack for them. It is bright, engaging and should be fun for them to use.

You can play snap, go fish, memory, use them as a word all or as flash cards. There are six sets of different colours/colors so they are easy to sort and pack up.

I had to come home early today as I was struck with a tummy bug that came so quickly. After a few hours sleep and some water and bread rations I think I am on the mend. It is never a good time to be out of a classroom and I was also absent from our team meeting.

 

Before I had to go, we had some preps who are doing such a great job with their word recognition when reading that we have started doing LSCWC with them .

 

Yesterday I blogged about using small whiteboards for this and how successful that was with this group. So we are about to use this book to cover the words we are looking at. Watch this space for how it turns out. We are trying to create independent writers and readers and this is one strategy.

 

For our Aussie bloggers/readers how are you processing our new curriculum for writing? The work samples for Foundation and Year 1 have us working really hard. They are above what our expectations were last year using our Victorian Curriculum for Prep and Grade 1.

 

Even though our cohort last year were well above the expected level by the end of the year, we have a bit of work this year but feel confident that we will have the majority of our students above the expected level.

 

We already have a core of students above in reading for June. Something to celebrate.

 

Word work

Last year we started 'daily 5' mid year. This year we have started day one.

Today we began to revise what is best fit and how this looks in 'word work'.

My Preps are all learning different coloured words using M100W's and this is the basis for our best fit word work. Some groups are working on silly sentences, which is a commercial kit and reading them independently.

Another group are using salt words to write their red words. This is in a container with about 2cm of salt in the bottom, like an old fashioned sand tray.

I also introduced LSCWC. They look at the word, say it out loud, cover it, write it and then check it.


They gave it a good go and I can see that I need to look at letter reversals and word reversals. I also noticed that we need to work on spaces between words too! An easy way to set learning goals.

There was also a group that are working on rhyming words and this was a lot of fun. There was lots of laughter about what else rhymes.
