This pack focuses on one Fairy Tale – Goldilocks and the Three Bears and gives many opportunities to explore and interpret the text through reading and writing.

Gingerbread Men

These are some photos I came across on my camera and they were too cute to not blog about.

 

We read the 'Gingerbread Man' and made these cuties....

 

One of our teachers in our shared space made all the dough.

 

The children rolled it out and decorated it.

 

We then had a parent man the stove and make sure that they didn't run away.

We so loved eating them!!!



Jack and the Beanstalk

If you look very carefully - you will see Jack climbing the beanstalk.

 

Don't you just love the stars? I was told Jack was climbing at night time.

 

We use Discovery Learning to explore characters, settings and plot in Fairytales.

 

This is part of our new curriculum and the students are enjoying showing us what they know about these three aspects of literacy.

 

We also use stamina to stay at one task and are ready to introduce our reporters and photographers to help at share time.

Fairy Wands

Fairytales, fairytales and more fairytales!

 

Here are some wands we made - of course glitter was involved

 

After we made these wands we took pictures and then decided if we had a wish what would it be?

These will be part of our portfolio that we share with parents at the end of the year.
 

Real beanstalks

We got this idea off Pinterest and fell in loved with it.

We planted sweat peas and they will eventually grow up and around the stick and into the castle.

 

We sadly got some of our work knocked off the table and one of my students said the next day 'Jack should have wiped his feet before he climbed the beanstalk.'

We had fun making them and watching them start to grow.

I love the effort that all my parents went to, to make sure that we enjoyed our Fairytale Dress-Up Day.
 

I apologise for the quality of this photo, taken on my camera and I had to reduce the megapixels to upload and blur faces.

We had Alice in Wonderland, Princes and the Pea, Frog Princes, Knight, Dragons, Wolves, Jack in the Beanstalk, pirates and witches.

Fairytale Dress-up Day

We had a huge Fairytale Dress-up Day today.

All our students came dressed on the most amazing costumes. I have taken photos, but need to hide faces before posting.
 

We made wands, magic mirrors, collages and just enjoyed being in costumes.

The brief was to use coloured paper and design the costume you wore to school today.

 

They did an amazing job.

The Kinder came to visit us and walked around our learnng space to check out our costumes.

Discovery Learning and counting

I absolute love Discovery Learning for so many reasons.

We started this task to show the setting for Goldilocks and the Three Bears and somehow ended up counting blocks and bears.

I was more than happy to have this task take a twist as I heard two boys counting beyond 36  and 59 for the first time.

It is also a great time to assess Interpersonal Skills for students.

As well as speaking and listening skills.

Volume and pitch of voice and word pronunciation often leads to incidental conversations about how to say certain words.

This is so important as then we write about what we do, and if our pronunciation is incorrect our words will be recorded incorrectly when we sound them out.

I get to listen, watch and participate in a play situation and often see a different side of some students.

In our shared Prep space we do this for half an hour a day, tasks are specific and directly related to our Inquiry/theme.

Discovery Learning - Fairy Tales

Some of our tasks for Discovery Learning are focusing on setting, plot and character. Here are examples of pastels to make backgrounds and this lets us talk about settings.

We have been using brick/stick/straw background papers to assist our Preps to make setting and then use their oral speaking skills to talk about the plot.

The shape blocks (attribute blocks) are being used to show settings and then telling a story. I am hearing the most amazing stories about Fairy Tales.

When we plan as a team we try to organise tasks that will show at least one of these aspects and give the opportunity to let them articulate what is important about the Fairy Tale they are working on.

It has been amazing to watch the growth in confidence and their ability to work in a group, share resources, set up and pack up.

Teen numbers

I looked around at my resource for teaching and consolidating the teen numbers for my students and wanted to update a resource I had sitting on my computer.

I have integrated the packet into the Fairytale Unit I am doing at the moment and know that the group who will use it will be motivated and will not know they are learning until they have learnt.

What I love about this is the background papers - I have taken a very bold approach and have used very bold backgrounds from 'I teach - what is your super power?' I just fell in love with them. I will let you know what my kids think.

There are 45 pages and three tasks.

They will draw collections of magic beans and match to the correct number on a recording sheet. There are 'missing number' sheets and matching collections to words and numerals.

Fairy Tales - My newest unit

We normally start the year off by doing some Fairy Tales and looking at characters, setting and plot. While this pack contains many writing tasks, for Preps at the start of the year most of these tasks will be modelled or shared.

Prep is the new Foundation in the Australian Curriculum and is our first year at school in Australia after three and four old kinder. I am not suggesting that you do all these tasks, but choose what best suits your grade and their teaching and learning needs.

In this pack (82 pages) are tasks for gathering what your students know, word walls, character/plot/setting, comparing, brainstorming, making a wand, I see/I think/I wonder, what characters do, rainbow words, change the ending, invitations, story charts, recounts and conflict/resolutions.

There are individual tasks for the following  Fairy Tales - they are my top ten Tales. They also fit with the Fairy Tales at 'Fairy Park' in Anakie that we visit for the day. (sheets for Mom/Mum favourite/favorite spelling too!)

Little Red Riding Hood: lists, sequences, character mapping, rhyming words, making a game, wanted poster, listing basket goodies

The Frog Prince: ‘fr’ and ‘pr’ words, beginning/middle and ending, reading and word games

Hansel and Gretel: design a gingerbread house, shopping list, labelling, decorate your own gingerbread house, problem solving

Snow White: characters and names, describing words, matching numerals to names, cause and effect

Goldilocks and the Three Bears: setting, matching, apology letter, describing feelings

The Three Little Pigs: speech bubbles, problem solving houses, record damage of houses being blown down, innovation for poems

Cinderella: before and after, lists, shoes, describing words

Rapunzel: story board, tower and ways to leave it, characters

Jack and the Beanstalk: problem solving, sequence of characters, cause and effect, change the ending, rhyming words

Three Billy Goats Gruff: rhyming words, draw/describe and action
