Create a Lemonade Stand

Our project based learning was lots of fun last week.

We planned and made scaled models of Lemonade Stands. We also created a Business Plan for our ventures. 

Lots of laughter about profit and loss, how much does one recipe make and how much to sell one glass for?

The task is to design a Lemonade Stand model to scale and produce a business plan to sell lemonade to customers.

I use these steps for Project Based Learning in my teaching and learning space.

1. Setting the stage for the learning that is about to happen and make a link back to a real life scenario

2. The teacher negotiates the criteria for evaluating the projects

3. Students become project designers

4. Students discuss information needed for their designs

5. Students accumulate the materials necessary for the project

6. Students create their projects

7. Students prepare to present their projects

8. Students present their projects

9. Students reflect on the process and evaluate the projects based on the agreed criteria

Students can work individually, in pairs or in groups.

They work through a task to design an outcome using their creative abilities.

The task is usually interdisciplinary and can involve Numeracy, Literacy, Science, Design and Technology.

The teacher’s role is to guide, check in and help to uncover content to be covered.

This pack contains tasks to help assess where each of your students are at the start of the school year for K-1. You will be able to then plan for what they need, depending on what they can show you with these tasks. It contains a colorful version and a ‘save my ink’ version.  (306 pages)

Ten Frames

 Use as flash cards to trust the count and Subitise, Use to make and record number stories 9 = 5+4. These cards are vertical to help prepare for place value and adding to ten 10 + 9 = 19.

Make a picture

Sequence the boxes in order of the numbers. This will show you a picture of the children who are ready for school. Copy, laminate and cut on the lines. Children will place back in correct order.

Peg my number

Count the objects and place a peg on the correct numeral.

Crayons needed to fit into the box

Sequence the boxes in order of the numbers. Then put the number of crayons needed to match on top of each box.

Which bus has more children?

Set one –0-20, Set Two –0-100. Color copy, laminate and cut. Place the children on the correct side.

Missing Supplies

Place the missing glue stick in the correct spot.

Skip Counting

 Display the A-Z cards around the room. Use the recording sheet to write your answer.

Roll and cover

Use a 6 sided dice - roll and cover. There are three additional sets that ask you to +1, +2 and double the number rolled.

Sequence the school supplies

Sequence the supplies - Color copy and laminate. You may use selected cards to sequence or all of them.

How many pencils?

Work out how many pencils. Color copy and laminate, then display around the room. Read the equations and use the pencils like a number line. Record your answer on the answer sheet.

Doubles

Color copy and laminate. Place the cards in a pile and take one at a time. Work out the answer, you may need to use counters to support some children. Record your answers on the answer sheet.

Time for the lessons to start

Color copy and laminate. One set is o’clock and one set is half past. Spread them out and match the correct labels.

A unit on time

I have been trying to finish this unit - but am trying to make it for USA K-3 and Australia F-3. If you have these year levels what would you like to see included?

When you look at either curriculum, USA has no outcomes for Kinder and by Grade One they need to know hours and half hours, then in Grade 2 nearest 5 minutes and am and pm. Grade 3 need to know nearest minute and measure times in intervals in minutes.

In Australia we look at days of the week, months of the year, seasons, calendars, half hours, quarter hours and investigate the relationship between units of time.

Jobs done

Today I had four goals that I wanted to achieve

-  tidy my part of the office that I share with our team - sense of satisfaction when that was done.

- put my new tub labels on the lockers. These are my editable labels that are on TpT, Notebook and Marketplace. Done and very pleased with how they look. 

- Maths shelves tidied so that my students can access materials 

- Last of all my red tubs are ready for our new curriculum with new labels and learning centres are ready to use

Next big job is to do our new art and craft space. We have pooled all our resources into one space. This will also be a great space to have about 8 students working on art and craft projects. 

Getting ready

Yesterday our Prep Team made a massive start on re-organising our space. We have made some big decisions together already. These include - no teacher desks in the space and not enough desks for each student. Due to how we manage Daily 5, not all students need a table at the same time. We have so much floor space and our two must haves were a space in each end for a double grade to sit as well as an additional space for a single grade to sit. We have a designated art/craft space, two reading tents and two home corners. We cannot wait until our students start and we start displaying work in our space. This is when it will look like a learning classroom.

I set myself a task today and that was to reorganise the maths corner so that our children can access hands on maths resources as they need them. The small whiteboards at the top are for displaying our Learning Intentions and Success Criteria.
