Reading

My Year 5/6 kids just love to read.

We do 'daily 5' and just love getting into our library and sharing books.

We read anywhere!

Font-astic favorites

The Polished Teacher has a link up about our favorite fonts.

I am a bit addicted and this was easy to do - hop on over and link up too.

Go and pick up the template and add your own favorite fonts.

You may even pick up some new favorites to go and find.

Please remember that some are copyrighted and make sure you check out the rules for using them.

Literature Circles - I just love them

This pack has taken me months to put together. I wanted to get my thinking right and ensure that it was right. It has been proofread and posted. I am so happy with it.

For 24 hours it is 50% and is only $3.00.
It will revert back to full price this time tomorrow.

Literature Circles
Introduce a role at a time for a favorite picture story book and discuss the roles and how they might look. When all the roles have been covered give students the opportunity to go back and check each role as needed. Then group your grade so that they have access to a text to share. Timetable each group and give them a timetable so that they know when they are on. Details are in the pack on to how to do this.

This pack contains 95 pages

Timetable
How to set one up….
It is best to have 5-6 in each group they need a reading session and two sessions to work on their roles before they present to the group.
Each student needs a copy of the text.
As they become more aware of each role, they can devise the timetable and share out these roles.

This pack contains the following roles
Discussion Director
Summariser/summarizer
Literary Luminary
Connector
Researcher
Word Wizard
Illustrator
Travel Tracer
and a Reflection section

Posters for display in your room

The cards will assist with time management and role clarity

Recording Booklets

Happy Literature Circles – you will enjoy the rich conversations

Plural Pack

Teaching kids about plurals can be tricky as there are so many different rules, exceptions to the rules and it just goes to show that our language is hard.

This pack may help your kids with plurals by creating interactive note pages so they can go back and refer to a source that has some words to help them.

These 'I have, who has' cards will help consolidate their thinking as well.

There are also some recording sheets to help define and illustrate plurals too.

Throwback - like real throwback

Here is a bit of a giggle photo - plus an 'oh my' moment.

I am linking up with The Teaching Tribune to share a photo of me in about Grade 5.

The link up is about sharing a photo of yourself at the same age as your current grade you are teaching, plus share the background of the photo.

Well my Mum had a knitting machine....
So Mum is wearing a super cool knitted purple shirt...
My little brother is in a super cool knitted shirt (it had angel fish on it) and knitted shorts.....
My sister and I are wearing identical knitted tops (rabbits were the go) and knitted shorts......
I am just hoping Mum is not wearing knitted long pants!

The real clincher is I am about 11 and my sister is about 10 and we are
WEARING THE SAME OUTFIT

Dad must be taking the photo and I often wonder if Mum knitted him an outfit - hehehehe

New project for Lit Circles

I used to do Literature Circles a long time ago, this year we use them every day.

We have some groups reading, some preparing their roles and some presenting their work.

The conversations are rich, deep and lead to a greater understanding of the text, characters, words, story lines and empathy for others' opinions.

I needed reminding about the roles and so did my kids.

So I have been playing around with these book marks.

The role of Discussion Direction is pivotal to how the group runs. Summariser needs to be succinct, and Word Wizard aids in our understanding.

The other roles are fantastic and we rotate them and give feedback.

It is a great way to have a kid's book club.

I have taken over our lounge room at home - printing, cutting and laminating.

I have created a 25 sets so that in our shared space we have one between two.

I know my kids will use them - so now my next question is - Where to store them?

I am trying to sort out my other notes and when I do I will package them together, so watch this space!

More Phonics packs posted

Boy - I have had requests for these packs and when I have done H-R-M and posted them - there will also be another bundle posted.

It is really important to note that not all students need all letters. We must do an assessment to see what letters and sound they do need. So you may only need some of these packs for your kids.

These packs contain many ideas and you will need to choose tasks for your kids. They couldn't do all of them. Sometimes when we introduce the sound, we need other tasks for revisiting the sound and letter. These packs will give you plenty of variety and suit every child in your grade.

Camp Quailty

This week we had a performance delivered from Camp Quality.
They are a non profit organisation that raises money for families who have children with cancer. They provide among other things - camps for kids who have this illness.
The puppet show is delivered in a very sensitive, humourous manner that shows how other kids react to kids with cancer.
It helps to clear misconceptions and it helps to educate us all about the way in which cancer effects kids and how we can help them when they are back at school.
Sadly, we organised this as one of our little guys has leukemia.
We also had a female student undergo chemo two years and pleased to say - she is in remission and happy at secondary school.
Our kids were given the opportunity to ask questions - boy did they ask some great questions.

Phonics for strugglers

If you have kids who are struggling to remember sounds or a new group who need to learn sounds - this second series will help you.
I have already posted about the
S-A-T-P-I-N series and each individual pack.
This 'Bb" pack is the first in the second series and is now posted in my store.
This series will take me a while before it is done....

Art work

Our Art Specialist Caitlin has been doing some amazing work with my Year 5/6 students. I think you will agree.
